Don’t cry for Leah! Ne pleure pas pour Léa!

“When God saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb, but Rachel remained barren” Genesis 29:31, NKJV. Leah’s story is quite intriguing. Forced to marry Jacob who instead loved her sister, she had to endure her husband’s indifference for most of her life.

When a man is ready to settle down and finds the woman who he has chosen to be his wife, he goes into a sort of “hunting” game. Jacob loved Rachel so much that he was ready to work seven years in Laban’s house without wages. You would think after such a heavy price paid, although he was deceived, Jacob would have embraced Leah and forgotten about Rachel. It was not so. The bible says that Jacob agreed to work seven more years to get the one he had chosen. In other words, Leah became a consolation prize. As a woman myself, I cannot imagine the pain she might have felt.

To add insult to injury, the bible also declares: “Leah’s eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance.” Genesis 29:17‭, NKJV. In other words, Rachel was more beautiful than Leah.

Rachel was the one Jacob preferred, even to the point of loving her children more than Leah’s own. Indeed, when Joseph was taken away to Egypt and asked his brothers to bring Benjamin, as the only condition for them to buy food and release Simeon, Jacob made the following statement: “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is left alone. If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.”
Genesis 42:38 NKJV

Yet, in spite of it all, there was Someone who was not indifferent to Leah and loved her regardless. When the time came for the reward to be given, Leah was far from forgotten:

1. Rachel died before Leah
2. Rachel was buried on the way to Eprath, while Leah was buried in the tomb  purchased by Abraham from Ephron the Hittite, alongside Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Jacob himself
3. Leah bore Judah, whose lineage was chosen to bring Christ to the earth and of whom Jacob said:

“Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father’s children shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion’s whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; And as a lion, who shall rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.” Genesis 49:8‭-‬10 NKJV.

What am I trying to say: Let us not worry about our current approval rate and keep trusting the One who knows the end from the beginning! At the appointed time, The Lifter Up of our heads will surely remember us! It appears as if Leah was brought into the story by mistake, but in the end, the Author and Finisher of our faith gave her the ending that she herself could have never imagined in her wildest dreams! Keep believing, He can do it for you too.

“L’Éternel vit que Léa n’était pas aimée; et il la rendit féconde, tandis que Rachel était stérile.” Genèse 29:31, LSG. L’histoire de Léa est assez intrigante. Obligée d’épouser Jacob qui aimait plutôt sa sœur, elle dut supporter l’indifférence de son mari pendant la plus grande partie de sa vie.

Lorsqu’un homme est prêt à s’installer et trouve la femme avec laquelle il veut passer le reste de sa vie, il se lance dans une sorte de “jeu de chasse”. Jacob aimait tellement Rachel qu’il était prêt à travailler sept ans chez Laban sans salaire. L’on pourrait penser  qu’après avoir payé un tel prix, bien qu’il ait été trompé, Jacob aurait accepté Léa et oublié Rachel. Ce n’était pas le cas. La Bible dit que Jacob a décidé de travailler sept ans de plus pour obtenir celle qu’il avait choisi en premier. En d’autres termes, Léa est devenue un prix de consolation. En tant que femme, je ne peux imaginer la douleur qu’elle a du ressentir.

Pour combler le tout, la Bible déclare également: “Léa avait les yeux délicats; mais Rachel était belle de taille et belle de figure.” Genèse 29:17, LSG. En d’autres termes, Rachel était plus belle que Léa.

Rachel était celle que Jacob préférait, au point d’aimer ses enfants plus que ceux de Léa. En effet, quand Joseph a été emmené en Égypte et a demandé à ses frères de lui ramener Benjamin comme seule condition pour pouvoir acheter de la nourriture et libérer Siméon, Jacob a fait la déclaration suivante: “Mon fils ne descendra point avec vous; car son frère est mort, et il reste seul; s’il lui arrivait un malheur dans le voyage que vous allez faire, vous feriez descendre mes cheveux blancs avec douleur dans le séjour des morts. ” Genèse 42:38 LSG

Cependant, il y avait quelqu’un qui n’était pas indifférent à Léa et qui l’aimait malgré tout. Quand est venu le moment de la récompense, Léa n’a pas été oubliée:

1. Rachel est morte avant Léa
2. Rachel a été enterrée sur le chemin d’Ephrata, tandis que Léa a été enterrée dans la caverne d’Éphron, tombeau acheté par Abraham, aux côtés d’Abraham, Sara, Isaac, Rebecca et Jacob
3. Léa a donné naissance à Juda, dont la lignée fut choisie pour amener le Christ sur la terre et sur lequel Jacob lui-même a prophétisé ceci:

“Juda, tu recevras les hommages de tes frères; Ta main sera sur la nuque de tes ennemis. Les fils de ton père se prosterneront devant toi. Juda est un jeune lion. Tu reviens du carnage, mon fils! Il ploie les genoux, il se couche comme un lion, Comme une lionne: qui le fera lever? Le sceptre ne s’éloignera point de Juda, Ni le bâton souverain d’entre ses pieds, Jusqu’à ce que vienne le Schilo, Et que les peuples lui obéissent.” Genèse 49:8-10, LSG

Qu’est-ce que j’essaie de dire: ne nous inquiétons pas de notre taux d’approbation actuel et continuons de faire confiance à Celui qui annonce dès le commencement ce qui doit arriver! A l’heure propice, Celui qui relève nos têtes se souviendra sûrement de nous!  Léa semblait avoir été introduite dans l’histoire par erreur, mais au final, le Chef et le Consommateur de la foi lui a donné la fin qu’elle n’aurait jamais imaginée dans ses rêves les plus fous! Continuez de croire, Il peut aussi le faire pour vous!
